It is a myth that cloth nappies use more water than disposables, there is more water used in manufacturing of disposble nappies than washing your nappies everyday.
It is also a myth that cloth nappies leak more than disposbles. The beauty of MCNs is that you can tailor them to suit your baby. Have a heavy wetter? Add a booster.
I have had less leaks (especially breastfed poos) in cloth than when my children were in disposables.
I have a child with sensitive skin, I was having to use a thick layer of cream on his bum at every nappy change using disposables, and thought that was 'normal'. Then we switched to cloth nappies and he never had to use creams again. The rash was gone, and he was always happy to get a nappy change. Especially when he got to choose which one to wear.
I kept using disposable wipes until my youngest started getting hives from the new formula of the particular brand we had used for years. They brought out an extra sensitive range, which got me thinking. Why shouldn't all products for babies be extra senstive? Why would I buy something that isn't extra sensitive to use on my babies skin?
So now we use cloth wipes as well, with a solution of camomile tea that I apply to the cloths at the change table.
Now that the word is spreading more brands are expanding and making thier nappies available to a wider range of people. Unfortunately though you won't find good quality MCNs in your local supermarket or department store yet. But there are lots of real life baby stores, and lots of online shops to browse for now.
